Students from across the state will meet on Saturday, February 27 for a morning of robot-building at Rawson Elementary School in Hartford.

The TRASH TREK℠ Challenge asks teams to explore the hidden but fascinating world of trash, from collection, to sorting, to smart production, and reuse.
They must also invent a solution to the trash problem and create their own LEGO MINDSTORMS® robot to accomplish trash-themed “missions” on a playing field. Students must also show how well they practice FIRST LEGO League Core Values which includes teamwork and how they carry themselves throughout the day.
A total of nine teams will participate including five teams (two all-girl) from Hartford. Other towns represented will include West Simsbury, Waterbury, and Middletown. The students are in grades 3-8.
Located in Hartford’s Blue Hills neighborhood, Sarah J. Rawson Elementary School is the state’s first Lighthouse School, working with a team of businesses, community groups, and educators to engage the school’s students in the world of STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
CBIA’s Education & Workforce Partnership serves as the Rawson Lighthouse project manager, administering a Department of Education grant to develop resources, support, and partnerships improve academic outcomes and develop a pipeline to the Academy of Engineering and Green Technology.
