Session's End Sees Numerous Legislative Retirements

At least 21 state lawmakers, including many long-serving legislators, will not seek re-election to the General Assembly this fall.

Nineteen House members—10 Republicans and nine Democrats—are retiring, along with two members of the Senate, one from each party.

CT-GA-pie_051316Senator Andrew Maynard (D-Stonington), who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a 2014 fall, will not seek a sixth term.

Heather Somers, a former Groton mayor who was the GOP nominee for lieutenant governor in 2014, is running for Maynard’s seat as a Republican.

Representative Craig Miner (R-Litchfield) is leaving the House after eight terms to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Clark Chapin (R-New Milford).

Insurance and Real Estate Committee co-chair Robert Megna (D-New Haven) is among the retirees, along with Manufacturing Caucus co-chair Selim Noujaim (R-Waterbury).

Higher Education and Employment Committee co-chair Roberta Willis (D-Lakeville) is retiring after 16 years in the House.

Representative Dan Carter (R-Bethel) is stepping down after three terms in the state House to challenge U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D).
